When I was being taught programming and html, I learned to always close your tags, if/then statements, etc, even if it didn't strictly matter. It's just good practice. I've had submissions get no votes for including group ends at the end of the cast list to close a group. What's wrong with putting a group end there?

It's my understanding that the group end divider is used to separte one group of Cast from another.

Why would you use an end divider if there isn't anything following it?

Edit: I just checked and per the rules: "Do not add a group end divider at the end of the cast, or at the end of a crew section."

This is not programming, html, tags, or if/then statements.

Follow the rules.

What Ace says does make sense, though. In every programming language it is either required or at least good practice to close all open commands in order to prevent errors such as memory leaks, endless loops, and division by zero. A database isn't really so different. While it isn't like programming for us to just add names to a cast list, the database's storage of information is like program code of its own, accessed and manipulated by the software based on rules that are set within.

I can only assume that the outer open/close for each cast and crew list that existed before group dividers were added to the software is such that a group-end divider, if added to the very end of the list, conflicts in some way with the final one... this is possibly so that names could be placed at the start of the list without the need of an additional divider that, since it would not have a name, would be an extra, pointless blank line. (Does that make sense?)

But again, this is only an assumption.
If at first you don't succeed, skydiving isn't for you.

He who MUST get the last word in on a pointless, endless argument doesn't win. It makes him the bigger jerk.

Regardless of the logic (or lack thereof) for using end group dividers, the current display just looks plain ugly if an end divider is used before a new group starts since it inserts a totally unnecessary horizontal line.

It actually says a bit more:
Quote:
Groups should be ended with a "Group End" type divider, unless the next entry begins a new group. Do not add a group end divider at the end of the cast, or at the end of a crew section.
