I'm certain this has been brought up before, but what do people think of adding Developed By to the writing credits? Like "Story by", it would have its own box rather than fitting into anything we currently have. Most of the time the Developed by credit are generally for TV shows (like Smallville, Battlestar Galactica, Stargate SG-1, The Vampire Diaries, etc)

Anyone else see the value of including it?

Sure!
As I understand it it's a variant of "Created By", which sadly doesn't show up in the Crew-Chart of the rules yet.
It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up!
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid?

This is needed and should be added to the Cast/Crew chart.

Don't let those people who actually get a Created By credit hear you say that as it is not a variant.  One goes to the person who came up with the actual idea while the other goes to the person who took an existing work or idea and made it work for the medium involved, i.e. taking The Incredible Hulk comic and making it work for TV.

Against this power, governments and tyrants and armies cannot stand.

We will teach it to them again.

Ahh,

so it's more like the difference between "Written by" and "Adapted by"?
In this case "Developed by" might even need a separate field.
It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up!

I'd say it might be a nice to have for some, but not a must have. Moreover, how many times, even for modern day movies, is this documented in any movies opening or closing credits? I do not recall it seeing that often.

For 'writers' there are already enough stories present about people not getting the credit they seek because at some moment during development they worked on the script. And whatever is left of their contribution to it or cut out, is documented best inside the head of the director and the producers. Not always correctly in some magazine, online or on paper.

In others words, will it work if we add it? Or will it introduce mayhem with contributors referring to their favourite piece of documentation on the net to support their particular view...

Not in movies but there's plenty of TV shows that have it. Turning it around, how many movies have "Created by"?

Not understanding this. As always, if he or she is not credited, then they won't be placed in the profile. In this case, the credit would be Developed by or Developed for Television by in order to get the credit.

Well, I did see some credits like "based on an idea from...", "based on the character XYZ (from ...)", "based on the TV series" when movies get sequels (or prequels). Not saying that all of them have it, just that it exists.

As for TV series vs. movies, I am not saying it's in the credits, but all Star Trek movies were developed on the basis of the Star Trek TV series, notably TOS and TNG. The series were first. If I remember well a number of them have quotes like "based on the ideas of G. Rodenberry" or something alike.
At present this is covered by "original characters by" supplemented by "story by" and "screenwriter". So what does "developed by" add beyond "screenwriter"? For movies, "developed by" is IMHO merely a reference to all unnamed screenwriters... So , in what movie is some important person falling through the cracks of the current crew definition?

So IMHO either it should be limited to persons credited as such (including synonyms) or otherwise strictly defined. Otherwise we're simply one step further on the road to copying the whole credit scroll.

Or is extending the definition of screenwriter a simpler solution?

If this is mainly used in television series and only to be permitted when explicit mentions in the credits is there, fine. My focus is on movies. And as said, I am not really interested in all those writers that 'developed' a script that is finally palatable to the director/producers/studios (pick any). Plenty of horror stories abound on many script iterations including the bickering whether somebody's contribution to it was actually useful or to the contrary.

That's where I'm coming from as it's generally only done in television, just as "Created by" was included and I don't recall seeing that in movies either yet it was included.
