I know we aren't suppose to bring contribution to the forum but contrary to some other I won't post names, so my goal isn't to shame users but just to be sure.

Currently I have the three original Star Wars movies in my voting queue (I have already cast a no but I want to be sure). BTW the first Star Wars isn't a problem as I've already voted yes to the change.

So here we go...

First case

The vote is to change the original title for Star Wars: Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back

The contribution note is "Original title added. Empire Strikes Back and Jedi both had Episode numbers on their discs. It comes about 50 seconds into the movie (the original theatrical release versions, released on DVD in November 2008 as bonus discs to the Eps. 4-6 trilogy) Posters have nothing to do with Profiler."

but no original poster mention an episode number

Second case

The vote is to change the original title for Star Wars: Episode VI: Return of the Jedi

The contribution note is "Original title added. Empire Strikes Back and Jedi both had Episode numbers on their discs. It comes about 50 seconds into the movie (the original theatrical release versions, released on DVD in November 2008 as bonus discs to the Eps. 4-6 trilogy). Posters have nothing to do with Profiler."

but no original poster mention an episode number

As you can see the contributor don't understand that the Original Title field is for the original theatre release title and not a re-release title.

Hope that you will be able to make him understand that it is indeed the case...

From the rules

Modified Titles: The Original Title field will contain the original theatrical title, while the Title field will contain the title of the DVD release.  For instance, for the Special Edition rerelease of There's Something About Mary:

Title: There's Something More About Mary
Original Title: There's Something About Mary

The contributor had already change his note two times because he is more interested in a you are wrong and I'm right fight than doing an usefull contribution.

The contributor is incorrect.

The Original Title for the original StarWars Trilogy didn't have any "Episode" added. This only came up with part 4 (Episode 1) to give the whole franchise a chronological order.
It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up!
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid?

The funny thing is that he say exactly the same thing I say for the original Star Wars...

Original title added: As originally released, Star Wars had no "Episode IV" in its title. The "Episode IV" was added for the re-releases.

Also this is an user that I always find reliable, so I find it weird to see him react that way (the I can't be wrong attitude and the note editing)

So the argument is that the title crawl is what passes for a title card in the Star Wars series, so we should use it, not the posters, as the source for the original title? Is there precedent on how we handle other movie with no title card or an odd one?

theatrical titles were star wars: tesb and star wars: Rotj, naturally not abbreviated. The episode was part of the opening sequence not the titling.
ASSUME NOTHING!!!!!!

IMHO the contributor is correct.

The original title is supposed to come from the movie credits itself. Episode IV has only become Episode IV in the first cinema reruns in 1980, shortly before Episode V came out. But Episode V has always been Episode V

These are the original movie credits from Episode V:

So unless the forum consensus is that this movie is called "Star Wars" (and nothing else) - which, quite frankly, wouldn't surprise me, the OT of Episode V is

Star Wars: Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back

Same goes for Jedi.

I agree with DJ Doena. The contributor is correct. We use the opening titles for the source of the original title, not posters.

The original titles for these films, based on their original theatrical opening titles are:

Star Wars
Star Wars: Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back
Star Wars: Episode VI: Return of the Jedi
Star Wars: Episode I: The Phantom Menace
Star Wars: Episode II: Attack of the Clones
Star Wars: Episode III: Revenge of the Sith

The episode #s have always been there for each one but the original Star Wars.

As per the rules: "Episode descriptors are part of the title; separate them with a colon and space; e.g. "Star Trek III: The Search for Spock". For multiple descriptors, use a colon and space for each break."

No Karsten he isn't... the rules said that for a film released under a different title

The Original Title field will contain the original theatrical title, while the Title field will contain the title of the DVD release.

The oririginal theatrical title of Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi are the titles used on the original theatrical release in 1980 and 1983 wich is in that case the name used on the theatrical poster as it is the case with every movie ever release theatrically. The rollback title or the copyright block are irrelevent...

The original titles are Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back and Star Wars: Return of the Jedi

I'm basing my opinion on this part of the OT rule:

Quote:

For profiles which have an alternate title displayed on the cover, use the title from the film's credit

The rules say to use the original theatrical title, a title who is written on every theatrical poster ever made... poster who are FYI use to promote the film and certainly not to invent title out of nothing as the director / producer had the final ok on them.

Is there a rule somewhere that states we take original titles from movie posters? I can think of a few movies that have promotional titles (used on posters) that differ from the title given in the movie. I would think the title that was used in the film should be the definitive title.

I'm sorry but I'm reading the equation "original theatrical title = original movie poster title" for the first time here on the forums. It's always been an argument of DVD cover versus what's in the opening credit.

Movie posters have never been a part of this discussion - IIRC.

Anyway, I posted my opinion, I stick to t and now I'm going to bed, it's 1:40am anyway.

Of course it's correct. We don't take our titles from posters.

Yeah, that's why the actual movie and its opening credits come into play.
