Just watched Argo. An entertaining film, but it is really worthy of an Oscar and a Bafta?

So what makes it so?

Sometimes all it takes to make a "best film" is a lot of other bad films.

I have questioned that for a number of movies that won or were considered.

I am beginning to think that it depends on the "political" statement that a movie makes (unfortunately).

I also did not think that Argo was worth the accolades (an enjoyable movie, but not Oscar worthy)

Much like every other award, it is so because a majority of voters felt it was the best of the bunch that year.  Does that really mean it was the best picture?  No, because it is a very subjective decision.

It won an award and that's all it takes. This year it didn't even need a director, apparently.

What makes a "best film?" Easy: a biased panel of judges that probably don't dive much deeper into each film than the $6 movie fan.

I don't consider it coincidence nor surprising when the $50,000,000 film wins 10 awards over a set of other films nominated that weren't shown in as many theaters (hence less coverage and money made.)

Hmm, Yes. I was reading the story of "The Canadian Caper" today. There were some liberties taken - the complete absence of Canadian John Sheardown and the Swedish Consul Cecelia Lithander, for example, and the backhanded swipe against the Brit & NZ embassies.

Still, never let the truth get in the way of a good story!  It was nice to watch a half-decent spy thilller where there were none of the usual "guns blazing away" scenes, and it had the "Argo? Argo f*** yourself" running gag, which made me laugh every time!

Sometimes I see the reviews of a film and many people loved it, but there is always at least one who didn't.
The same take if many hate it, there is always one who loved it.

I have bought a film just because just because so many reviewer tore it apart. I just had to see for myself how so many famous actors could be in such a bad film. The film Caligula and yes it was gross.

Anymore, it seems that the Oscars are the way Hollywood's wind is blowing that year.  If you are on the happy list you get nominated.  You know, "It was an honor just being nominated."  If you are on the happy, happy, joy, joy list.  You somehow made the judges love you, you win the award.  But, isn't that how all popularity contests work?

It has always been that way, not just nowadays.

Not just 'America' as the Hollywood Foreign Press Association...which is made up of, about, 90 international journalists...picked Argo as their best film as well.

Agreed, it got a Bafta as well. Don't get me wrong, it was a thoroughly enjoyable film. I just wonder what aspect made it worth "Best Picture".

Since 2000 I've loved exactly half of the Best Picture Winners - the other half I've watched but would never watch again:

Never Again:
There Will Be Blood
The Hurt Locker
Slumdog Milliionaire
Argo
No Country for Old Men
The Departed
Crash

Loved 'em:
The King's Speech
The Artist
Million Dollar Baby
LOTR: Return of the King
Chicago
A Beautiful Mind
Gladiator

Wow, almost the complete opposite.  The King's Speech and The Artist were both good films, but nowhere close to being the best.  Chicago & A Beautiful Mind were the least deserving of the last 20 years, Chicago in particular, seeing it at this years Oscars was a big WTF until I realized that the Chicago's producers also produced the Oscars.  Hope they didn't  hurt their arms patting themselves on the back.

I liked Crash, but it also too wasn't the Best Picture.  There Will Be Blood did not win, it lost out to No Country for Old Men which is one of my favorite movies of all time.

In the end I enjoy the Oscars, but they don't mean much as being the 'official' movie award.  They often get it wrong more often than they get it right.  Since the vast majority are old white guys they have certain types of films that like to award.  They love period costume dramas.  They love Biopics.  And above all else they love movies about movies.

Of that list, Return of the King and Gladiator are the only two I would...and have, several times...rewatch.
