Rest? That man will not rest. He is now busy at the big theater in heaven where fortunately they only show good movies.

I will miss his writings, greatly.

... but why do so many internet tributes about an outspoken atheist include references to heaven and an afterlife? If you wish to honor him, please honor what he expoused.
If it wasn't for bad taste, I wouldn't have no taste at all.

Dude, that was a wholly unnecessary gibe.

I consider myself Catholic, lock, stock and barrel, with this technical loophole: I cannot believe in God. I refuse to call myself a atheist however, because that indicates too great a certainty about the unknowable.

He was way more complex than that, and he really disliked others placing him in any category. I was wrong... he acted atheist, but refused to call himself that: Here.

Nevertheless pretending to speak for someone else, especially one who just passed away, is not welcome and certainly not honoring.

He probably only owned a few. Watching others' movies and critiquing them was his job, so he was likely always prepped for watching the next one rather than really caring about any of the old ones, moving on rather than holding on which is kind of like standing still or looking at the past.
If at first you don't succeed, skydiving isn't for you.

He who MUST get the last word in on a pointless, endless argument doesn't win. It makes him the bigger jerk.

Dark City.

Also, Floating Weeds.

Criterion posted the first 4 minutes of his Floating Weeds commentary. The comments in the thread reminded me that Ebert also did a video introduction to The Decalogue.

Actually he owned thousands. On WGN, Dean Richards, an entertainment reporter/movie reviewer for WGN, visited his home and did an interview with him about a year or so ago. He was so organized that he had tabs for each letter of the alphabet on the dvd shelves.

About 1:04 left on the interview it's shown.
Video interview here
