Something that's confused me/caused me issues is finding a specific title when there are multiple listed.

For example, I'm trying to add my Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle collection.

These two options show up:

http://www.invelos.com/ProfileLinks.aspx?id=IF1FA788F200D0CFB

http://www.invelos.com/ProfileLinks.aspx?id=883929054275

I'm willing to bet my first born child that they are the same thing, just with different catalogue numbers (one looks to be the UPC, I don't know what the second is).

Is there anyway to merge these entries or link them somehow?

Now to add a bit more complexity to this specific example, it's not actually a single DVD but a set of DVDs (can't call it a box set because it's stored in a CD-Wallet type thingy).

What's the proper/best way to approach this?

Going by the numbers.. that is the Parent (by UPC) and Child (by Disc ID) profiles of a box set.

Any release with multiple films are considered a box set here at Invelos. Meaning next to no info in the parent profile (basically just the box/container) and then info per disc (or per side of disc for duel sided discs) in the child profiles.

When you add the parent profile it should automatically ask you if you want to download the child profiles as well. That is as long as they are correctly linked.

Is it safe to make the assumption that for a box set, the contents of the set should be disc ID's and the box set itself a UPC?

Most of the time. There is sets where the outer box (Parent profile) houses multiple cases that each has their own UPC. Then in those cases the both the parent and the child profiles would be created using the UPC numbers.

For DVD-Profiler UPC and Disc-ID are (in combination with Locality) the two possible identifiers for profiles.

Those profiles with UPC are usually (but not exclusively) used for single retail releases.
Disc-ID is used for evry title that has no separate UPC attached (boxset-content, magazine DVDs, etc)

So for DVD-Profiler-purposes different identifiers means different profiles.
Just because they share the movie-title, doesn't mean they are identical, they can (and usually will) differ in the Tech-Specs (Audio Tracks, Regions, Bonus-Features, etc).

Merging and/or linking profiles is currently not an option for DVD-Profilers online database.
The merging of Cast/Crew data for identical titles is currently in discussion. But I wouldn't be too optimistic that this will ever come.

When adding a title to your DVD-Profiler collection the "Add By Title"-option should only be chosen in cases where neither UPC nor Disc-ID brought a result. In this case the downloaded profile(s) should be corrected to match the edition you have in your hands (UPC, Locality, Tech-Specs, coverscans, etc).

So be careful when betting on your first born child, you may loose it.
It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up!
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid?

Base on you post, it sounds like you are adding by title.  You can save yourself a lot of confusion if you added by UPC as, assuming the title is on the database, that will give you the profile for the one you have in your hand.
No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever.
There is no greater power in the universe than the need for freedom.
Against this power, governments and tyrants and armies cannot stand.
The Centauri learned this lesson once.
We will teach it to them again.
Though it take a thousand years, we will be free.

For a few of my titles (namely box sets) I no longer have the UPC.  TMNT is one, Game of Thrones is another.

Other box sets that I have aren't in the database and the contents of them don't have UPCs.

You could add just by disc id (pop the disc into the computer drive and it should bring up the title if it's in the database). I haven't done this myself for a box set, but it might not bring up the parent profile automatically as most box sets (TV notwithstanding) do not have disc ids associated with them. But you will get the actual disc profile so that will be accurate.

I'm guessing this is the case as well.

This has made me look at my own TMNT boxset that I recently purchased and can see was not set up correctly within DVDP.  I own the 4 Film Favorites edition (UPC 883929136872) and while the parent looks correct, each child profile is assigned by UPC to each of the 4 movies. Since this is a 4 Films Favorite collection, there are just 4 discs in 1 keepcase, so there are no UPCs for each of the 4 movies included. Hmmmm...guess I'll have to work to fix this when I have some downtime later this week.
