I have a question about how much leeway we have for OMB writing credits.  The Rules tell us:

Quote:
The table below gives each of the crew roles available within DVD Profiler. For each category, include only those people credited with the roles listed in the "Role" and "Credited As" columns. If someone is not credited with one of these roles (or direct translations of these roles), do not include them in the Crew section.

Given what the rules say, and what the table contains, are any of the following credits contributable as OMB?  Why or why not?  Please elaborate, particularly if you feel any are not contributable.

My view is that there is some flexibility because of the Notes section, and that these are all contributable as OMB, but based on recently accepted contributions I'm beginning to doubt my judgment on this.  What says the community?

"Adapted from the Novel by"
"From the Story by"
"Suggested from a Play by"
"Taken from a Story by"

"Margaret Mitchell's Story of the Old South GONE WITH THE WIND"
"Dracula by Bram Stoker"
"Much Ado About Nothing by William Shakespeare"
"H. G. Wells' The Invisible Man"

IMO "OMB" has something like a "catch-all provision" which is "Adapted from another work" in the "Notes" section of the Crew-chart.

The actual credits have a large bandwidth of variations, when limiting this to those entries in the chart we would have to omit almost every credit.

From your list I would without hesitation enter all as OMB, except for "H.G. Well's The Invisible Man".
This would possibly be entered too (especially if no better fitting credit is to be found), but at least I'd hesitate.

What I wouldn't enter as OMB though would be "Ian Fleming's James Bond" for those films that are not actually based on one of his stories. IMO this case would (at most) justify an "Original Characters by".
It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up!
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid?

Why hesitate on H. G. Wells' credit but not on Margaret Mitchell's credit?  They're virtually identical.  What if either of those had been the only writing credit in the film?  Would that make any difference?

Because, in fact, I've stopped reading the Margaret Mitchell part after the word "Story" ...
But you are correct, basically they are identical.

The hesitation is based on the experience that "credits" like this are usually the title of the feature which I normally wouldn't consider to be the proper place for individual credits.
All in all this "hesitation" is based on a feeling that something might be wrong and nothing I could put my finger on.
It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up!

And I think that's a feeling a lot of other people may have too.  But I've found that it's not uncommon for the writer of a famous novel to be credited as [Author]'s [Famous Novel] at the beginning of the film.  If documentation can be provided, is this enough of a credit to be contributed as OMB?  I think so, but I'm not convinced that Invelos' screeners think so.

This really becomes a problem when such a credit is the only writing credit in the film.
