Something is bothering me about the credits for The Great Escape. In the film, the opening credits list cast starting with Steve McQueen, James Garner and Richard Attenborough, going through the members and ending with Karl-Otto Alberty, no roles given, somewhat like this:

Steve McQueen
...
Robert Graf
Jud Taylor
...
Karl-Otto Alberty

Then at the end, there is a set of credits of the more prominent actors and their roles in reverse order of the opening credits - starting with Robert Graf and ending with Steve McQueen.

The problem is that most profiles I have looked at (my specific set being 027616-905710) seem to be listing the actors in the one way that is most disallowed by the contribution rules - they take the ending credits in that order, then after, list the remainder of the cast from the opening credits. So, you have Robert Graf first, all the way to Steve McQueen, then Jud Taylor and the rest through to good old Karl-Otto Alberty.

Robert Graf
...
Steve McQueen
Jud Taylor
...
Karl-Otto Alberty

Now, the contribution rules state "If a film has actors listed in the opening credits, which are not listed in the end credits, add these to the list in DVD Profiler before those taken from the end credits." Should it not be that the actors listed in the opening credits (Jud Taylor through Kar-Otto Alberty) should be listed first in the profile, then following them with Robert Grat through Steve McQueen, like I list below?

Jud Taylor
...
Karl-Otto Alberty
Robert Graf
...
Steve McQueen
I don't wanna be like everyone else, that's why I'm a mod, see?

yes... per rules any that are in the opening credits but not in the end credits should be listed first... not last.

According to the rules, it seems it would be correct to include Jud Taylor through Kar-Otto Alberty first, then the guys in the end roll call. I asked a similar question in another thread a week or two ago and that seemed to be the thought of those who chimed in on the boards.

The problem is, of course, that it doesn't make much sense since the key cast all get top billing in both the opening and closing credits before the other guys. It's a flaw in the rules that works well for TV but not for older movies like this which only have opening credits and reprise the key cast at the end.

The problem is you are trying to apply the standard credits (ending credits) rule to films that the standard credits of the time, were a complete list of actors at the beginning of the film along with crew. Sometimes they would add ending credits of the main cast with charactor names.

I blame Ken for assembling the group of contributors that came up with the contribution rules and guidelines.
I don't think he chose wisely. And now the rest of use have to do the best we can, knowing we are doing it against common sense.

The rest of us don't have to contribute at all, so if you're doing something against common sense it's your own fault.

common sense tells me to quit trying to fix profiles, but since "the rest of us don't have to contribute at all"
