I just saw on tvshowsondvd.com that Star Vista Entertainment/Time Life will be releasing the complete series on DVD in the second half of 2014. Looks like they are doing it right and are trying to get all the music rights. Hopefully there will be plenty of extras like their Get Smart and Six Million Dollar Man releases.

First Batman and now The Wonder Years  -  2014 is turning out great for TV releases!

Star Vista Entertainment/Time Life just sent me an e-mail with a little more updated information on the upcoming release. Here are the questions they addressed/answered:

Since word got out that we are releasing The Wonder Years on DVD, we've been flooded with fan questions. Here's the behind-the-scenes scoop, straight from our production team:

How soon can I get The Wonder Years?

We are expecting the collection to start shipping early fall. We'll send out an email when the date is confirmed. Fans will have the opportunity to pre-order, confirming their place as one of the first to receive the collection.

Will the original music be included?

This show has been kept from DVD release for years due to music licensing rights. We are working with music publishers and record companies now to clear the path to include the series' original soundtrack, including the iconic theme song "With a Little Help from My Friends."

How many DVDs and episodes will be in the set?

We are releasing all 115 episodes on an estimated 20 DVDs. The number of DVDs may increase depending on the amount of bonus features we are able to create and acquire.

Will it be released on Blu-ray?

We do not have any plans for a Blu-ray release at this time.

So it looks like everything is still on track. Besides the original music, the bonus feature info is encouraging, especially the "we are able to create" part, which hopefully means some cast interviews and commentaries.

Good to hear, but no blu-ray no sale for me.  Unless it's really really cheap, which it won't be.

I'm in and really, other than getting more episodes on a disc, it wouldn't benefit very much on Blu-ray or would be cost efficient for the company.

Since China Beach was $200 for 4 seasons + bonus features, I would imagine that The Wonder Years would be around $250 for its 5 seasons + bonus features.
My one wish for the DVD Profiler online database: Ban or remove the disc-level profiles of TV season sets. It completely screws up/inflates the CLT.
FACT: Imdb is WRONG 70% of the time! Misspelled cast, incomplete cast, wrong cast/crew roles. So for those who want DVD Profiler to be "as perfect as Imdb", good luck with that.
Stop adding UNIT crew! They're invalid credits. Stop it!

Hi,

I'm so glad that THE WONDER YEARS will finally be making-it onto DVD. I can't believe the number of people I've heard saying "If it isn't on Blu-Ray, then I ain't purchasing it"!  Sometimes you have to accept, that not everything is going to be out on Blu-Ray. Plus, I doubt it would be economically viable to remaster all 115 episodes (6 Seasons worth) into 1080p HD anyway. (Are there likely to be 35mm prints available anyway, or do we suspect the show will simply be transferred from the best-available SD tape formats, in some form?)

I'd rather have the show out on DVD only, than not have the show out at all, just because a few people have to now own every single thing on Blu-Ray!

I just received another update from Star Vista Entertainment/ Time Life on the Wonder Years:

Dear Wonder Years Fans,

We’re starting work on our DVD bonus features and would love to know what your favorite episodes are.

Post your favorites on our Facebook page so we can make sure to highlight the episodes you like best!

Winnie & Kevin Forever!

From,
The Team at StarVista Entertainment / Time Life

Here is the address to their facebook page:

http://e.timelife.com/a/hBTMHYrB8hQPnB84-tyAAR3hu46/wy13

They only sent the message out about an hour ago, but there are already a lot of responses. Looks like they might be trying to determine which episodes to create commentary tracks for. I'll keep updating as they send more information.

A double    back at you.  I can accept that it isn't on blu-ray. I'm not sure of the details in this case, if they already have it ready to go in 480 I can surely understand why they wouldn't release it in HD if it wasn't cost effective.  If this is the case, I would love to have it on DVD, but I'm not going to spend Blu-ray money on DVDs.  If I ran across it for $10-$15, which is above my normal limit for DVD TV series, a season I might have interest in it, but I doubt it will ever get that cheap, so more than likely it'll never be part of my collection.

Way to make assumptions based on a remark I made about this specific show.  You know what they say when you assume...  I own many things on DVD that will never be on Blu-ray.  Do I wish they would?  Sure, but I'll be more than happy to have them on DVD.  If it were a film or TV I loved then I'd definitely be more likely to buy it on DVD, but in this case it isn't a must have.  But I understand for some, it is.  Different strokes.

My assumption, wasn't aimed at you. It was a general comment, stemming from the number of complaints I've read on social media and internet forums, from people who seem to think that everything must be released in HD on Blu-Ray, and refuse to accept that that isn't always going to be a) possible, or b) reasonable. It was NOT aimed at you, so I apologise sincerely if it seemed like it appeared too.

Of course, we'd all love everything to be available nice-and-cheaply in HD on Blu-Ray, but for a lot of classic TV shows, that isn't going to be possible, and I just wish people (in general, not you specifically DoubleDownAgain) would engage their brains, before posting/commenting that X show isn't coming out on Blu-Ray, and therefore they're not going to buy it. It's an infantile mentality, and it gets right on my proverbials!

The latest update from Star Vista Entertainment/ Time Life just came out this afternoon, and gives a clue to one of the extras that will be included. There will be an interview with Neal Marlens and Carol Black, the creators of the Wonder Years. Today, they released a 37 second excerpt from the interview, taking about how they cast Fred Savage as Kevin Arnold, which is posted on YouTube:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rUBy6mg8cLM

If this link doesn't work, go to youtube and type "Wonder Years Creators - Casting Fred Savage"

Hopefully there is a lot more bonus content in the works! Based on their pattern so far, there should be another news update in about 3 weeks. I'll post it as soon as I get it!

No worries... I figured as much, but I was the only one in the thread.

I'm more than likely not going to pick it up, but happy for those that are excited for it.

I got another e-mail this morning from Star Vista Entertainment/Time Life on The Wonder Years release; here is the text portion:

Have questions for The Wonder Years Cast?

We're excited to announce that we're officially getting the gang back together!

The Wonder Years cast will be reunited for a Q&A session, exclusively for our upcoming DVD release!

What would YOU like to ask your favorite cast members?

Post your questions on our Facebook page and we'll do our best to get as many answers as we can during our reunion shoot.

We’ll send you a sneak peek after the shoot and the full cast reunion footage will be included in our DVD bonus features.

Thanks in advance for your questions!

From,
The Team at StarVista Entertainment / Time Life

It looks like they are going all out to make this one of the best TV series releases. I can't remember any other release involving the fan's input as much as this. Hopefully they don't screw up the packaging with some custom cardboard disc scratching sleeve or folder.

Lots of activity this week from Star Vista Entertainment/TimeLife. Below is the content of the e-mails they sent me the last two days.

Yesterday they released a few short clips from the recent cast reunion for the bonus features:

Mom & Karen

Kevin & Paul

Wayne

Today, they topped that with the first pictures of the package, disc count, and extras as follows:

Packaging details have finally been revealed...

Here's a first look at The Wonder Years Complete Series limited-edition metal locker – just like those featured at Kennedy Junior High!

The locker will include a replica yearbook with signatures from cast members, behind-the-scenes photos and classic show memorabilia.

Also included are two notebooks like those carried by Kevin and Winnie, each featuring detailed episode information, production photos, all 115 episodes plus over 15 hours of bonus features on 26 DVDs. You'll even get custom Wonder Years magnets to decorate your locker!

Still no date or price yet, but the pictures look great! My only concern is if the custom "notebooks" that hold the disks will be disc scratchers or not. I'd hate to see what is looking like one of the best series releases of all time to be ruined by poor package design. Time will tell.

And again this morning I received another update from Star Vista Entertainment/TimeLife. This is the general pre-order announcement for the Wonder Years, although no release date is given. It seems there will be three different releases. First, is the "basic" complete series that had been discussed all along, including all the bonus feature DVD's, yearbooks and locker packaging. The good news is that it is a bit more affordable at $249.95. Next you can step up to the Wonder Years "experience", which has all the stuff from the basic set, plus Kennedy Junior High t-shirt, tube socks, gym bag, a new music cd, and more. This one is $299.95.  Finally, there is the signature edition, which is identical to the experience edition, but is limited to 500 cast signed in yearbook copies with a certificate of authenticity, for $499.95.
