I can't figure out if this is a rental release or bootleg that I ended up with... any help is appreciated.

The Heat (blu-ray)
UPC: 024543877271

The case, disc, menu and all does look professionally made. There is no extras on the release.... though there is a good selections of bonus trailers that play before the menu comes up. Odd thing... instead of scenes/Chapters/what-have-you... it says Search for the scene access. I at least can't remember any other releases that calls it Search.

But most everything here screams Rental version to me... even though it doesn't say so on the package. Thoughts?

Found one on ebay with that UPC. It has a Walmart sticker on it.

Does the complete UPC# match.

Amazon has it too, even in their "official" (non-marketplace) store, so a bootleg at least is quite unlikely.
It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up!
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid?

Wal-Mart had a bunch of Fox BDs on sale for $5 a few months ago (X-Mas time I think) that were all stripped down versions like this. I almost bought X-Men: First Class but noticed the back before paying and put it back (the front was very similar to the normal retail version, close enough to fool at a glance). My theory is these are extra or excess or returned rental discs with a new back cover and UPC. So far I've only seen them at Wal-Mart and pawn shops. I also recall "The Sitter" on a solo disc with only the theater cut, no features, and the same front cover as the standard which has unrated/theater cuts and bunches of extras (just missing the "Totally Irresponsible Edition" banner).

I have never rented a DVD ... that I can  think of ...

( well maybe 8 years ago I rented Boston Legal Year 1 )

but would Red Box rentals use stripped dvd discs for their program from the studios directly?

I sometimes buy $5 blue rays at Walmart discount bins  ( The Passion of Christ  / and The Perfect Storm  )  and both  of these were loaded with extras and features ....

I believe all or most Fox releases from the last few years call it "Search" and gives you bookmark and scene selection options therein.

I have seen many that have search

IIRC one prominent release that does is Avatar.

But I see it all the time in blu-rays
