Which one is the role and which one is the dog's name?

I think it's teh right way to do for any non-human actor.

On Smallville the dog Shelby (aka Krypto ) was portrayed by "Bud the Dog" for all his seven years on the show.

I think you have the right idea. Maybe check if any of those dogs have been in anything else with a different, non-honorary name, but if this is their only credited role, then first name is what I interpret the rules to do.

If the same dog has different names, we should open a common name thread. And if two different dogs have the same name, we have to find their BY.

     
I never should've opened my mouth. The likelihood of dogs sharing the same name is huge.
That said, 'honorary dogs' is just funny as hell to say out loud!

So, there are at least 3 animal actors who have approved BY's in the database.

I think there is another Awesome Pants who is a porn (dog) actor. We will definitely need a BY...
