Hello

I just did a change and tried to contribute this. But not possible, now it tells there is already a pending contribution and that I must wait with mine until the pending is accepted. This seems to be new, right?

This makes it a bit difficult. F.e. there is a contribution just for cast and crew and I will contribute the other things, perhaps only the scans. No I must put it beside and think to contribute it later.

An understandable move by Invelos, but occasionally a little frustrating. I've already run into occasions where I couldn't submit a simple data correction just because another contribution of better cover scans was already pending...

I understand it helps to cut down on multiple contributions of very similar data, especially now that new features and updated rules are available, but for more generic stuff, the concept of "I'll have to remember to try that again next week" isn't exactly great.

This isn't a permanent change; it's just for the initial surge from 3.9.

Thanks Ken! This is great to know, as it makes work a bit tricky. I change something, can't contribute it and forget about it. Good to know it will change later again how it was.

I think it should be tbh. I often see several people submitting the same things, each with a couple of differences etc. Just makes it easier to track for the sake of a few days patience.

One thing you can do is create a Tag to track these for future contribution.

Perhaps.  It was intended to be temporary, but let's see whether it does more good than harm.

I think it does more harm than more good. Sometimes in new profiles somebody does contribute the scans. When I get the film I make all and like to contribute the rest without the scans. Now I must wait 5 to 7 days until I can do this. Or you see a contribution with all NO votes and can't do a good contribution because you know it will be declined. For all this I don't like to wait, because then I forget and this does harm the database because good data will then not be contributed or lost.

Scenario:
Somebody contributes for the new profile the scans, locked for 5 days
I have a full contribution with Cast and Crew, must wait 5 days.
Then somebody is faster, he contributes the Overview, locked for 5 days again.
I still wait .....
Then after 5 days somebody corrects the date of releas, locked again for 5 days.
I still wait ..... I have all ready, but was never on time to contriube it.

This cannot be good at all, right?

Could be a PITA when you try to correct common names or add birthyears to actors though...

Personally I'm not a great fan of the idea.

Quit a few profiles I've worked on have been completed through multiple pending contributions where users have only added data others haven't.

The real issue is with new profiles, where people submit before one's been accepted or just after without having downloaded the updated profile, i.e they aren't aware there is an existing set of data.

A more robust way of highlighting an existing contribution would be a better way of handling this rather than blocking multiple submissions entirely.

Perhaps blocking areas of submissions where that particular section has already been submitted would be a good option?

That, yes, or only have it apply to new contributions.

As SpaceFreakMicha points out, the current situation becomes quite bothersome when you're trying to propagate a new-found common name or a new-found birth year through your profiles. You've just figured that out, you've got the justification ready to paste into the contribution notes, and then you find that you can't immediately contribute it to half of the profiles that need it. Not only do you need to remember that you need to try again next week, but at that point you'll also need to dig up that bit of documentation again. Sure, it can all be done - we can use tags to remind us, we can look up/copy previous notes - but it does really take up more time than it should.

I could live with either of these options, not sure how easy either would be for Ken though.

Yeah, sections sound good. When I submit a cover-scan someone else still can submit e.g. Cast and Crew.
The submit-page could grey-out any overlaps and should clearly(!) state something along the lines of "Contrbution for this section pending".

Exactly

I could see blocking by section.
