The rules state that the year of production is:
the year of the original theatrical release
My question is what counts as a theatrical release?
For example a film is shown at a film festival in 2014 and in normal cinemas in 2015.
Which year belongs into the database?

This rule is not phrased very well because many movies are never released theatrically. In my opinion it's the best option to take the year of the first public showing of the film, the same criterion IMDb uses for the release years in their database. So I voted 2014.
Recently bought films:

The Matrix [Blu-ray] | Shirins Wedding [DVD] | The Graduate [Blu-ray] | Prometheus [Blu-ray 3D] | Hwal [DVD]

I agree with Discostu. For me, it's about being accessible to the general public. Meaning: a festival you can buy tickets for counts, exclusive press showings don't.

And I would treat other forms of release than in a theater much the same way, i.e.
- TV show: date of first airing
- straight to video: date of first release on video
- streaming service: date it was added to the streaming service's catalog.

DVD Profiler users used to be pretty strongly adamant that film festival releases were not to be counted as year of release.

Looks like it's ping ponged in the other direction now.
