My question is what counts as a theatrical release?
For example a film is shown at a film festival in 2014 and in normal cinemas in 2015.
Which year belongs into the database? |

In my opinion it's the best option to take the year of the first public showing of the film, the same criterion IMDb uses for the release years in their database. | | Posted: | | | | I agree with Discostu. For me, it's about being accessible to the general public. Meaning: a festival you can buy tickets for counts, exclusive press showings don't.
And I would treat other forms of release than in a theater much the same way, i.e.
- TV show: date of first airing
- straight to video: date of first release on video
