There's a contribution up, and I am honestly confused about it's addition of an Original Title.

It is for The X-Files: The Complete Season 1 Blu-ray profile, and the Original Title is being added to that profile as The X-Files: The Complete First Season

The new Blu-ray set has this title on the front cover: The X-Files: The Complete Season 1
The old DVD sets (English speaking territories only) have this title on the covers: The X-Files: The Complete First Season

The contribution notes state that this needs to be added into the database "To link the 2 titles as 1 season/credit in the database" between the new Blu-ray set to the old DVD Season sets.

I've looked in the database... and the Finnish & French DVD Season One sets do actually have "The X-Files: The Complete First Season" entered and approved in their Original Title fields. Searching the database for simply "X-Files" and picking out all the foreign Seasons releases shows that any current "linking" consistency certainly is not working too well there.

I've never encountered this while voting before, but don't the Original Title rules only apply to actual film or episode titles? Is "Season 1" or "Season One" of a TV series more valid or original than the other? They never appeared in the actual TV episodes like that.

I would vote no to that. While the season indicator is put in the title field per rules... it is not part of the original title. Per rules the original title is to capture the title of the film/TV show when it was originally released. Season indicators was not part of the original release.

I missed Orici's post about the same time this was posted...so this is sort of a duplicate of that, but does have the poll. Ken can close this thread if he wishes.

Yeah, that's the way I viewed it as well Pete.

Well, there is a something to be found in the pinned "Collected Statements from Invelos on contribution discussions"-thread: click! But that's more about cases where the show title is translated as well. At the very least, Invelos' statements there contradict Pete's stance that season indicators don't belong in the "original title" field at all. The difficulty is in ensuring they're all the same...

There's also this earlier poll, where a (small) majority voted for using "Original Title: Original Season Descriptor" in the OT field.

Personally, I feel that the same season of the same show should have an identical original title across the various regions and localities. But how to achieve that is another matter - certainly this community will never manage that on it's own without a clear rule on the matter.
