Lastly I've submitted my first 2 blu-ray profiles created for 3D blurays and I set the value of the "Edition" field to '3D' because I thought this is the correct way - I simply checked a few of my owned 3d blurays and noticed it is done quite often this way.

But next I thought it might be a good idea to set this 'edition=3D' for all my 3d blu-rays where it's not already set and contribute the changed profile and stumbled across this one here:
Baymax 3D

In this contribution thread 'Lobo1980' says
Quote:
Remove 3d from Edition (3D is not an Edition. Sometimes it's written at the end of the title and there, but it is in Dimensions as 3D and 2D disc.)
( corrected 'Remote' to 'Remove')

So - what is the correct way to insert '3D' into the title? Basically I'd say in case a movie is available as '2D' blu-ray and additional it's also available as '3D' blu-ray it looks like an edition to me, either I have the common '2d' edition or the '3d' edition.

But I also noticed that I can only select 1 value for edition - so in case it is e.g. a 'Limited collectors edition' and '3D' I'll run into problems

Please help me to understand how to it the correct way

you can type your edition in the edition field to get 3D Limited Collectors Edition.

Ken has ruled on this already--3D almost never goes into the edition.  Here's what he said:

primetime21 is correct... 3D does not go in the edition field often.

Any chance a link to this post from ken is included into the contribution rules? It would make the life of newbies like me a lot easier...

No... many clarifications and decisions from Invelos never makes it to the rules... even if they say they will add it. But there is a thread pinned with several of the clarifications and decisions.
