Determine what you want your collection to look like. Begin organizing it as early as possible, although, I had waited too long and it took a lot of effort and time to rearrange mine.

Strive for a consistent look or pattern.

If you would like the cleanest look, eliminate the extra title descriptions … such as “Widescreen”, “Special Edition”, etc

Eliminate the long title descriptions, such as “The Big Bang Theory: The Complete First Season: Disc one” … change to “The Big Bang Theory: Season 1: Disc 1”

Again, be consistent with your titles. I always use the numeric “1” instead of “one”. Much cleaner look and a little more compact.

Always use the “lock buttons” on the fields you change, or, they will revert after refreshing your collection.

Use the Sort Title field to manipulate titles so that they fall properly in the alphabetical sort. Examples: “Sandburg’s Lincoln” Use “Lincoln, Sandburg’s” ….  “Tony Bennett’s New York” Use “Bennett’s, Tony New York” to keep the artist’s titles together.

Do not list a box set as both the box and the individual discs. This skews your disc count.

If you have titles other than just movies, such as TV Series or special interest discs, I would separate them with a separate range of collection numbers. Always leave a large enough gap in the numbers to allow for the expansion or your collection.

To separate these titles alphabetically, I assign each TV sort title a “zz Mom: Season 1: Disc1”. For Music videos I use “zzz Bee Gees: In Our Time”. And for special Interest, “zzz1 Planet Earth: Disc 1”. Be consistent with whatever letters you use. I found z’s to work best as no words would ever begin with multiple z’s.

To title the sections in you database such as “TV Series”, you create breaks and title lines, the same as if you were adding movie titles, but, using your sort letters (zz) at the beginning of each line.
Example:

DVD Title: *************************************
Sort Title:  zz    1

DVD Title:            --- Television Shows ---
Sort Title:  zz    1  --- Television Shows ---

DVD Title: *************************************
Sort Title:  zz    1

See my collection for reference.

Hope this helps in cleaning up your databases …. Wish someone had done this earlier, before I learned the hard way!

Comments, critiques or suggestions?

I see no mention of tags.  Tags are very useful for filtering your collection.  For instance, I use tags to differentiate between boxes and discs.  I also use tags to differentiate between movie profiles and television profiles.  They are very useful for such things.

As for collection numbers, I have no use for them and they're completely arbitrary in my database, which just goes to show that there is no one size fits all solution for how to use DVD Profiler.

Hey all....    Although I haven't implemented this idea to my own collection yet, I do like Lowpro's approach of using Custom Collection Categories to segregate Concerts, Documentaries, and Television Series from Movies.      Have a look at his suggestion here:
